You’ve probably been lying on the same mattress for years, and you have never once thought about the dangers it might pose. As long you get a comfortable night sleep, you won’t give much thought to how it was manufactured and the chemicals it contains. But you should be very cautious when choosing a mattress for you and your family members because it might contain toxic substances. In fact, most mattresses are treated with chemicals, such as Polybrominated diphenyl ethers or PBDEs to make it fire resistant. Regular mattresses also contain carcinogenic elements.

It is crucial to raise awareness regarding the possible dangers that traditional mattresses pose to human health and to the environment. With that said, more and more people are opting for all-natural, organic, and environmentally friendly mattresses since they are safer and have fewer detrimental impact towards the environment.

All-Natural And Eco-Friendly Mattress

Why Most Traditional Mattresses Are Not Considered “Green”

Regular mattresses are manufactured using various chemicals and toxins which can cause health problems, as well as negatively impact the environment. These regular cushions are made with synthetic foam which is cheaper and more comfortable than innerspring mattresses. Unfortunately, this material uses natural non-renewable resources. In addition, toxic chemicals are used to manufacture the foam and these chemicals are then released into the environment through the air and water.

The glues and chemicals used in traditional cushions leak contaminants into your home. In fact, off-gassing has been linked with certain side effects, such as respiratory discomfort, allergies, endocrine disruption, and cancer. The following are some of the reasons why traditional memory foam, innerspring mattress, and synthetic latex are not considered green choices:

  • Use of chemicals, toxins, and glues
  • Synthetic fabrics
  • Non-recyclable and non-biodegradable materials
  • Manufacturing procedure contaminates the air and water
  • The chemicals used produce off-gassing

What Is An Eco-Friendly Mattress?

When we say “eco-friendly mattresses” or “green mattresses”, it generally refers to products that do not have a negative impact towards the environment or lowers the impact relative to an alternative product. Here are some of the features you should look for when choosing an eco-friendly mattress:

  • No Volatile Organic Compound or VOC
  • Zero-emissions during production
  • Uses natural, renewable, and organic materials
  • Durable and able to withstand wear and tear for many years to reduce waste
  • Efficient shipping methods

If you are looking for a mattress, you can choose one that is made with any of the following materials:

  • All-natural and organic wool: This type of mattress is naturally fire and dust mite resistant. Make sure that the wool came from humanely treated sheep.
  • Organic cotton: Although this material is not fire resistant, it can be wrapped in wool layers to comply with the regulations set by Consumer Safety Commission. The organic cotton can be used for wrapping and batting.
  • Natural Latex: This material is usually derived from rubber trees. Natural latex is a better option than using petroleum-based polyurethane foam.

Going Green With Regular Mattresses

Memory Foam Mattress: You can use memory foam mattress as long as it is made with sustainable ingredients. You can consider a plant-based memory foam since it replaces a huge amount of oil-based products with renewable plant-derived materials. If you are not comfortable with using a latex cushion or if you have a latex allergy, this is a much better option. This type of cushion can be made without VOCs and with zero emissions to further lower the environmental impact.

Innerspring Mattresses: This mattress can also be manufactured to become more eco-friendly. Manufacturers can replace the synthetic foams with latex or with plant-based memory foam. In addition, they also need to replace the fabric and fire-resistant materials with natural materials. Lastly, if you want to go green with innerspring mattresses, you need to look for a cushion that uses recycled steel. Unfortunately, eco-friendly innerspring mattresses are hard to find; thus, their rarity makes them more expensive.

These are just some of the things you should consider when choosing an all-natural and eco-friendly mattress. Choosing a green mattress for your bedroom will not only provide you with peace of mind, but it will also provide you with a healthier sleeping environment without compromising your comfort.
