Solar Panels, Artificial Sunlight & Draining The Sun: Part Science, Part Satire

This notion of solar panels draining the sun has been making the rounds, and just to put it to rest, I want to categorically state a resounding “Are you kidding me? Of course not!!”

Satire & Hocus Pocus Pseudo-Science

The report that gave rise to the panic is purely satire – intended to be humorous. In fact the “National Report” article published this hocus pocus piece:

“‘Put into laymen’s terms, the solar panels capture the sun’s energy, but pull on the sun over time, forcing more energy to be released than the sun is actually producing,’ WIT claims in a scientific white paper published on Wednesday. ‘Imagine a waterfall, dumping water. But you aren’t catching the water in buckets, but rather sucking it in with a vacuum cleaner. Eventually, you’re going to suck in so much water that you drain the river above that waterfall completely.’

“WIT is adamant that there’s no immediate danger, however. ‘Currently, solar panels are an energy niche, and do not pose a serious risk to the sun. But if we converted our grids to solar energy in a big way, with panels on domestic homes and commercial businesses, and paving our parking lots with panels, we’d start seeing very serious problems over time. If every home in the world had solar panels on their roofs, global temperatures would drop by as much as thirty degrees over twenty years, and the sun could die out within three hundred to four hundred years.’”

The National Report is a satire site – consider yourself warned or enlightened…

The Cloud Before The Silver Lining

That said, in the spirit of encouraging creative and out-of-the-box thinking, I wonder what would we do if this were in fact true? Artificial Sunlight for Solar Panel

We might try creating a global sun shield or screen or even filtering the “rays” used by captured by the solar panels and redirecting them into vast belly of outer space. Sci-fi aside, we might consider creating artificial sunlight to reduce our dependence on the real McCoy.

Artificial Sunlight That Mimics The Sun

We don’t have to wait for the sun to drain because researchers have already “developed a laser-based instrument that generates sunlight” – this according to Tasshi Dennis in a TechnoStorm article (

Moreover, Tasshi Dennis  – from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the US – posits that”we can focus the light down to a spot less than two micrometer in diameter, despite the wide spectral content. You cannot do this with sunlight.”Solar Panels, Solar Energy

Where is the Green Solutions Benefit?

When – not if – but when this device becomes as everyday, widespread and mundane as the cell phone, we can heat our solar panels at night, in the dark or in countries and cities that have extended periods of winter-type weather. For me this is a green solution – yes, light and bright but a green solution.

So even though we need not worry about our solar energy resources disappearing, it’s reassuring to know that we can have some other solar energy producing options that we can use right away, even if only indoors.  The NIST researchers are working to make this new and exciting device programmable and portable for outdoor use. Stay tuned…
