Hydroponics has been used by pot growers for decades, but the hydroponics industry has seen rapid growth within the last few years. As states like Washington and Oregon adopt laws making recreational marijuana legal, over 25 states in the U.S. have legalized marijuana for medicinal purposes. Many states allow medical marijuana users to grow plants and produce their own product, making quality growing supplies in higher demand than ever.

Hydroponics is a method of gardening that doesn’t involve soil, and instead, uses nutrient enhanced water to feed the plants and provide a healthy crop. Hydroponics is popular because it provides an easier way for patients to grow medical marijuana indoors. Hydroponic growing is faster, easier and produces better results when compared to traditional in-soil growing methods. Hydroponics provides higher yielding crops, faster grow times and stress free maintenance. By growing indoors, patients don’t have to worry about pests or diseases killing their plants.

Hydroponics is an industry that owes its success to medical marijuana

As medical marijuana thrives, so does hydroponics. In Seattle and Portland, two cities within states where recreational marijuana has been legalized, hydroponics stores are sprouting up in commercial areas. Retail hydroponics stores don’t make much currently in states where medical marijuana remains illegal, but in states where it’s legal, these stores are starting to do well. Not to mention, there’s an online market for hydroponics supplies that is a relatively new industry.

Growing medical marijuana is often preferable to high dispensary costs Hydroponics - Medical Marijuana

Medical marijuana is expected to continue growing and this will push hydroponics forward as well. With many sub-products possible such as stealth grow boxes, grow tents and ventilation supplies, there is a lot that goes into growing medical marijuana successfully and it’s starting to become a big market.

Purchasing medical marijuana at a dispensary can get costly and for many users, growing is a practical alternative that when done right, won’t be a disturbance smell wise either. Many medical marijuana users opt to buy the product rather than grow it because of it strong smell, but the right supplies can almost entirely eliminate its smell from a home and make growing in a spare bedroom possible. Hydroponics setups can easily be concealed within tents that will help mask the smell and provide an easy way to setup ventilation with carbon filters. Carbon filtration is the number one way to reduce odors and by using an intake and outtake fan, connected to a carbon filter, the smell can be eliminated before it becomes noticeable.

Hydroponics can be an expensive and stressful start to a new grew. Inexperienced hydroponics growers should expect to struggle and run into problems when getting started. Maintaining the right nutrient balance in the water, checking for pH and caring for the plants creates new challenges with hydroponics that soil growing doesn’t present. Fortunately, there are numerous hydroponic growing guides that you can find online and a lot the learning process is done through trial and error and not necessarily something you can teach in an article.
