Market Your Green Business

Go Green Tips – Market Your Green Business

Many of us take our sustainability efforts to work with us.  We carpool, recycle paper in the office, use energy saving light bulbs, and unplug the computers at night.  As upper-level management, sharing these eco-friendly efforts with our customers sounds appealing.  But how do company owners go about marketing their green business?  Here are five ways to make your green marketing strategy successful. Market your green business.

1.  Know exactly what your customers want.  Don’t assume everyone will love you just because you are green!  For example, one luxury hotel in California learned this the hard way.  They put extensive marketing resources into sharing the fact that they were a top-notch green hotel.  However, people related “green” with “space” and “uncomfortable.”  As a result, the hotel owners switch to a different marketing approach – we’re luxurious and green.

2.  What does green mean to you?  Today’s sustainability-savvy customers can quickly become disenchanted with a company who doesn’t live up to its eco-friendly claims.  Make sure the public knows exactly why you claim to be green.  Do you use solar energy to power your factory?  Tell them.  Do you telecommute to reduce your carbon footprint?  Tell them.

3.  Let customers know they can still save their green by going green.  Sadly, these days, saving the planet just isn’t as important as saving money.  Even eco-friendly customers generally rate a product in the following order.  First, is it good for my budget?  Second, is it good for my family?  Third, is it good for the planet?  Let them know that a green product does not equal a more expensive product.

4.  Walk the walk.  Image what customers would think if they received a paper coupon in the mail from your “eco-friendly” company.  They wouldn’t be customers for long! Walk the walk and market your green business.

5.  Embrace the locals.  This is one of the easiest steps to overlook; it also happens to be one of the most important.  Eco-friendly customers are all about supporting local businesses to help reduce the carbon footprint and encourage companies in their green efforts.  Show them you feel the same way.  If you own a restaurant, buy as many food items as possible from the local farmer’s market.  A bank owner could offer low interest rate loans to clients who build their new house with sustainable construction.  There are a ton of ways to get involved in the community and showcase the fact you are serious about your green efforts.

What do you think?  Do you have a green marketing tip that was left off the list?  Have you tried green marketing?  Have your efforts been successful?  What about SEO – have you managed to incorporate green into your online efforts?  Let us know!
