The Green, Green Grass of Home – Go Green

When people tell you to go green, do you sometimes feel like you are missing something? And when you hear of the green, green grass of home don’t you sometimes go green with envy or a longing for what used to be?  Well, chances are you’re not alone. Go Green - Green Green Grass

You see, talking about home itself can set you up for that old familiar feeling – especially if and when life is quite good on the home front.

And what about the green, green grass? Does this not remind you of something that was – something that used to be? Yes! For some reason the green, green grass can suggest good memories, happy times, a past when the future looked bright, promising and full of eager opportunities. A time when people did go green. But they did no go green because of any special commitment to issues or ideology. Rather, that’s just the way it was. The way it used to be.

In that time, we walked more – not forced, not programmed, not rigid. It was simply a way of life supported by cultural and economic practices and outcomes. And even as we did, we dreamt of a time when we wouldn’t.

We grew more of our own fruits and vegetables – we had a go green lifestyle. We shared what we grew with our neighbors who did very much the same. Yet, deep inside we yearned for the time when we wouldn’t have to do this. No one told us to go green – this was not even a talked about concept for most folks. As a matter of fact the activities we had and the perspectives that shaped our understanding of these actions were the nothing more than accepted steps on our ladder of social mobility.

You did not go green because you wanted to save any environment; very often you would go green because there was no other option.

Even so, that’s what we knew; that’s what we did. But it sure looks as if life was greener then than it is now. No, I mean literally greener.

Or is it that I am caught up in that whirlwind of sentiments that are triggered by the green, green grass of home? Either way, go green and stay green.
